Description

World War II-dated TLS, one page, 6 x 8, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force letterhead, June 17, 1944. Letter to Mrs. J. H. Mason, in full: "I shall be happy to comply with your request and am enclosing my new shoulder sleeve insignia. Thank you so much for your good wishes." In very good to fine condition, with somewhat irregular toning, and a few small smudges to the signature. Accompanied by a letter of transmittal from Kay Summersby, dated May 31, 1945, sending thanks on the general’s behalf, and by the original mailing envelopes.

A member of the British Mechanized Transport Corps during World War II, Kay Summersby served as a chauffeur and later as the personal secretary to General Eisenhower between the years 1942 and 1945. The pair spent a great deal of time together and, with Eisenhower’s help, Summersby became a U.S. citizen and a commissioned officer in the U.S. Women's Army Corps. Rumors of their affair soon ignited, with published books and wartime correspondence between Summersby and Eisenhower offering evidence of a decidedly informal relationship.
