World War I-dated DS, one page, 8 x 7.5, April 18, 1918. An official dispatch from the Navy Department addressed to Assistant Surgeon Edward F. Mullaly, with subject reading: "Detached Navy Yard, New York: to duty connection fitting out S.S. New York, and on board when commissioned." The letter reads: "1. You are hereby detached from duty at the Navy Yard, New York, and from such other duty as may have been assigned you; will report immediately to the Commandant, Third Naval District, for duty in connection with fitting out of the S.S. New York, and for duty on board that vessel when placed in commission. 2. This employment on shore duty is required by the public interests." Signed at the conclusion by Franklin D. Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In very good to fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge, multiple horizontal folds, and a trimmed bottom edge.
