It was a great triumph, and I am particularly appreciative of the way in which the women stood with us." In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt came out for women's suffrage and became a great champion of women's rights. Despite overwhelming support for Roosevelt in the Republican primaries, Taft was handed the nomination at the Republican National Convention in June. Roosevelt then broke away from the party to run as a member of the Progressive Party (nicknamed the 'Bull Moose Party'). Recognizing his support for women's suffrage, Jane Addams endorsed Roosevelt at the National Progressive Convention in August, and seconded his nomination for president.
