Description

Confederate major general (1836-1906), known as 'Fightin' Joe,' who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. ALS, three pages, 5.5 x 8.5, Hotel Sanz letterhead, December 10, 1904. Wheeler writes to his daughters, in full: "I find I will be here for several days possibly until Thursday. I thank you so much for letters. I was out to a great church today. It is a collection of churches about three miles from the city. To-morrow and Monday are important feast days and the services are interesting. I went to the cemetery & among others was Santa Ana's tomb. The views from the elevations are very fine indeed. I think I wrote you that President Diaz would witness the firing of our gun to-morrow. I don't think it should be done but the Catholic have their own way. I want to be with you very much. I have a room which has good flow of sun in the morning. With all my love, Devotedly your father." In fine condition.
