Advocate on behalf of the indigent mentally ill (1802-1887) who created the first generation of American mental asylums. During the Civil War, she served as a Superintendent of Army Nurses. ALS signed “D. L. Dix,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Office of Women Nurses letterhead, October 5, 1865. Letter to Mr. Otto, in full: "I have rec'd yr letter and have through the records of various offices traced your son to a Gen'l Hospital wounded at the last Battle before Petersburg. I hope in a few days to have other information. I should suppose that some Members of his Co. or the Regimental Surgeon might know something. I will do all I can to learn the facts & write again shortly." In very good to fine condition, with overall soiling, and a split along one of the two mailing folds.
