ALS, one page, 6 x 8, January 22, 1888. Letter to the Hon. John S. Wise in New York, in part: "Your pleasing letter of the 17th instant is received. I take it as a very great kindness of you to mention my name so favorably to the President elect. I have some doubt if his party is prepared to choose one from this end of the Union just yet. This opinion however does not take from your generous act any of its force, nor does it lessen my feeling of obligation." In fine condition, with an area of thin paper to right side.
