Buddy Holly's Coral Records contract for "two masters now entitled ‘Peggy Sue’ and ‘Everyday’"

DS, signed “Buddy Holly,” one page, 8.5 x 11, August 30, 1957. Agreement between Coral Records and Buddy Holly, in part: “Pursuant to letter agreement between us dated May 16, 1957. we are hereby exercising our option to enter into the contract for your personal services bearing date therewith, the term of said contract to commence August 30, 1957. It is hereby mutually agreed: 1. Two masters now entitled ‘Peggy Sue’ and ‘Everyday’ shall be deemed to have been recorded under the said contract. 2. We agree to pay you the sum of $600.00 for the aforesaid masters which shall include the advance to you under said contract together with the costs for recording. 3. All terms and conditions of the contract shall apply to these recordings as though they had been performed under said contract and shall serve to reduce the number of record sides required to be recorded thereunder. 4. The sum of $600.00 provided to be paid to you shall be an advance against royalties.” Signed at the conclusion by Buddy Holly, and also signed by Holly’s producer Norman Petty and Robert Thiele, the Coral Records Director of Artists and Repertoire. In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner.

Buddy Holly recorded the classic ‘Peggy Sue’ at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis, New Mexico, on June 29 and July 1, 1957. Capitalizing on Holly’s summer success with ‘That'll Be the Day,’ Coral released the single on September 20, 1957, with the song ‘Everyday’ on the B-side. ’Peggy Sue’ immediately leapt up the charts, catapulting to number three on Billboard’s pop charts in October. One of Holly’s masterpieces, ‘Peggy Sue’ ranked 194 on Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time,’ and was included by NPR on their list of the ‘100 Most Important American Musical Works of the 20th Century.’ The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. A truly remarkable document preceding the release of an incredibly influential song.
