Duane Upton, in part: “In answer to your inquiry, I think that the program to explore the moon would be worthwhile even if there were no such place as Russia. This is a tremendous exploration, probably the greatest that man has ever attempted. As we have learned from our predecessors, research and exploration usually pay off far more in the future than we can ever foresee at the outset. We have no more idea what we will encounter than did Columbus. With this being one of the greatest efforts at exploration ever attempted, it is probably safe to assume some of the greatest eventual benefits.” In fine condition. A tremendous pre-Gemini letter from the first man to orbit the Earth, commenting on both the Cold War’s ‘space race’ and the future of exploration . Interestingly, Glenn resigned from NASA the day after writing this letter, and, a day after that, announced his candidacy as a Democrat for the US Senate from his home state of Ohio; of course, he would fly again on the STS-95 Space Shuttle mission in 1998.
