Colonial ironmaster and a signer of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Pennsylvania (1716–1781). His ironworks supplied cannon balls to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Extremely rare partial manuscript DS, signed “Geo. Taylor,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 6.25, April 22, 1774. Conclusion of an agreement through which Henry Vanderspiegel sells Taylor “for & in consideration of the Sum of One Hundred & Sixty pounds…all his Messuage House & Improvements in The Town of Northampton…It is the Intention of the parties to the within agreement that the Two Last payments shall not bear Interest.” Signed at the conclusion by both Vanderspiegel and Taylor, as well as Thomas Craig and Charles Craig as witnesses. Bottom portion of the document is absent. In very good condition, with light show-through from writing to opposing sides. In 1774 Taylor joined the Northampton County Committee of Correspondence, an early revolutionary political group that operated locally, and he was elected to the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly the following year. Although he was not initially a delegate to the Continental Congress, he was appointed to it as a replacement after five Pennsylvania Loyalists delegates were forced to resign.
