Description

January 1861 commission for the “Union Regiment of Volunteers of the District Columbia”

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 16 x 10, January 25, 1861. President Buchanan appoints J. G. Jewell as “Second Lieutenant of Company ‘B.,’ Union Regiment of Volunteers of the District Columbia.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of War Joseph Holt. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, vertical bands of toning (one passing through a couple letters of the signature), and a few small edge tears. Dating to late in President Buchanan’s term, this document comes from an incredibly tumultuous time in American politics: six states had seceded from the Union by the end of January, putting the nation on the brink of war. This appointment is for James Grey Jewell, a doctor who helped raise troops in addition to enlisting himself. Buchanan military appointments are uncommon, with this being a superior example made in anticipation of the coming Civil War. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
