Civil War-dated ALS signed "U. S. Grant, Lt. Gen. U.S.A.," one page both sides, 5 x 8, Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, April 16, 1864. Letter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. In part: "Permit me to ask as a favor personal to myself the reappointment of Frank W. Agnel as Acting Midshipman to the Naval School. This young man entered last year but for some deficiency either in his studies or some other cause was forced to leave. His appointment now would necessarily throw him back to start just where he was one year ago, but no greater favor could well be asked for the young man and I do not ask reinstatement." In fine condition, with intersecting folds passing through the signature and partial separations to the blank adjoining page. At the time of this letter Grant was just one month removed from his promotion to lieutenant general, giving him command of all Union Armies. He was busy devising tactics for the soon-to-come Overland Campaign, which began as Grant's forces crossed the Rapidan River on May 4, 1864. The series of battles over the course of the next two months resulted in a great strategic victory for the Union and the start of the Siege of Petersburg. Excellent military content from this important time in Grant's career and a decisive period of the Civil War.
