Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “J. Tyler,” one page, 13.75 x 16.25, August 23, 1842. President Tyler recognizes a soldier. In part: “I do hereby confer on First Lieutenant William Albertis of the Army of the United States…the rank of Captain by brevet…for gallantry and good conduct in the War against the Florida Indians.” Prominently signed at the conclusion by President Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of War John C. Spencer. The crisply embossed white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, wrinkling to the upper portion of the document, and some soiling to the lower left.
The nearly seven-year-long Second Seminole War had come to a conclusion on August 14, 1842, just one week before Tyler issued this military promotion. After ending the long, bloody war—regarded as the the longest and most costly of the Indian conflicts in United States history—President Tyler expressed interest in the forced cultural assimilation of the Native Americans and looked toward westward expansion. It was on Tyler’s last full day in office, March 3, 1845, Florida was admitted to the Union as the 27th state. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
