Davis’s personally-owned Cartier watch. Watch and clasp were made in London in 1972, done in a style unique only to Cartier of London, and sports a black crocodile band, gold clasp stamped with several proof marks as well as a “1228,” on the back of the loop, and is engraved on the reverse, in an imitation of his own signature, “S D Jr.” The stamped number is in all likelihood the reference number for Cartier London, although it could be a production number for the casemaker. The hallmark “JC” is Cartier’s registered London mark. The mechanism is a fine grade LeCoultre 17J. The form of the watch, with its unique dial orientation, is seen in only a few Cartier models from France; otherwise, the watch is of unique style, and at most very limited production. The case and deployment clasp are 18K. Watch comes in its original Cartier box. In fine condition, with a dial refinish, which is quite common. Watches were Davis' obsession and he had a collection of nearly 5,000, many of which he gave away in the last year of his life as gifts. RR Auction COA.
