Description

Lyrics from the most trying time in his life: “God knows that I’m innocent”

Handwritten working lyrics to ‘An Innocent Man,’ one lined page, 8.25 x 10.75, circa 1993. Jackson pens preliminary lyrics for the song in blue ballpoint, later editing and adding notations in pencil. In full (spelling and grammar retained): “If I sail to Accapulco or Cancoon / Mexico / There the law is waiting for me / and God knows that I’m innocent / if they won’t take me in / Cairo / then lord where will I go / I’ll live or die a man without a / country / But only God knows I’m an / innocent man now. / let the whol world / turn against me. / or: God knows that I’m innocent / Now. / God knew I was innocent now.” Cloth-matted and framed with an image of Jackson’s mug shot to an overall size of 18 x 28. In fine condition, with three horizontal folds and scattered wrinkling. Written at the height of the 1993 child sexual abuse accusations against him, Jackson’s words are deeply personal and revealing of his inner thoughts during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
