Description

“I still have to deliver to you the three paintings you chose,” writes the artist to renowned collector Paul Gallimard, “I am duly in the process of working on them”

ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, July 16, 1889. Letter to Paul Gallimard, in part (translated): “I have just received the sum of 8,500 francs from Mr. Perrot on your behalf. I thank you very much, but that wasn't a pressing matter since I still have to deliver to you the three paintings you chose. I am duly in the process of working on them and when you let me know I will send them to you at the address you will give me…Please give my best regards to Madame Gallimard.” In fine condition, with some slight haloing to a few lines of text, not affecting the legibility at all.

With a keen ability to recognize modern genius and invest in it, Paul Gallimard became a prominent collector in the French Impressionist art world. Though most frequently associated with Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who was perhaps his dearest friend (and who painted a well-known portrait of Madame Paul Gallimard), he also developed friendships with other artists of the day including Monet. Among his enormous collection of Manets and Degases, Cassatts and Cezannes, were several pieces by Monet, the most famous of which was the 1890 Last Rays of Sun from the coveted Haystack series. Not seen publicly since the Durand-Ruel in 1895, the piece went up for auction in 2001 and fetched an astonishing $14.2 million—the highest price ever paid for a work in this series. An excellent letter from the Impressionist master to a good friend and legendary collector, addressing three of his paintings that would find their homes in one of the finest private collections of French art ever built. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
