American author (1843–1909) who published under the name Pip Pepperpod. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Chalmers and Wolfe of San Francisco, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, “C. H. Webb Esq. from his friend, Chas. Warren Stoddard, S&F 29th July ‘68.” In very good condition, with missing two corner tips, scattered light toning and soiling to image side, and uniform toning and pencil notation to reverse. Webb is probably Charles Henry Webb, an American journalist who wrote under the pseudonym John Pal. Webb also published Samuel Clemens’s first book. RR Auction COA.
