Description

Rare “Paul J. McCartney” signature from the mid-1960s

Vintage ballpoint signature and inscription “To Janice E. Berry from Paul J. McCartney, sincerely best wishes and hi!,” and also signed in blue ballpoint, “love, Jane Asher,” on an off-white 5 x 3.5 album page. In fine condition, with a couple minor creases. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a 2012 letter of provenance from the original recipient which reads, in part: “This is a genuine autograph of Paul McCartney and his then girlfriend Jane Asher…I’m not too sure of the date it was obtained but I think around 1966/1967. My mother worked for a catalogue company and one of her customers was Paul’s cousin…Paul visited this cousin quite often and was sometimes seen strolling along the promenade which was just down the road from his cousin’s. My mother arranged for mine and my brother’s autograph books to be left at the house. Paul and Jane were due to make a visit and they kindly signed the books personally addressing the autographs to me.” Asher and McCartney were a couple for five years after meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in 1963. A very scarce example of McCartney’s seldom-seen more formal signature. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
