DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, January 4, 1938. Gustavus A. Pfeiffer delivers 23 shares of “William R. Warner & Company Inc. Second Preferred Stock, having a par value of $100 per share to be held by you under the same trusts and in all respects be considered as and which shall be a part of the said trust estate as though the same had been delivered to you at the time of delivery of the said Trust Agreement.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Hemingway and in blue ink by Pfeiffer. In fine condition, with diagonal crease through last letter of signature, binder holes to left edge, paperclip impression to top edge and a bit of scattered light toning. Accompanied by a page notarizing each signature and a letter from Pfeiffer to Hemingway about the Trust Estate.
Following the publication of his 1936 short story, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Hemingway, a one-time ambulance driver in World War I, focused his attention on the travesties of the Spanish Civil War. Having witnessed the horrors of war firsthand, Hemingway grew concerned that inserting himself into a war zone as a reporter also meant placing himself in harm’s way, hence his creation of this trust for his son, made in connection with his wife’s uncle, Gus Pfeiffer. This document focuses attention not on Hemingway, the brilliant writer, but on Hemingway, the caring father. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
