Third person ALS in French, 6.25 x 4, one page both sides, 6.25 x 4, February 7, 1797. Letter written by Adams on behalf of George Washington, written to the National Assembly of the Batavian Republic (successor of the Republic of the United Netherlands). In full: “Finding a propos that John Quincy Adams, the Resident Minister of the United States of America to the Batavian Republic is going into another mission, he has received order to be dismissed from you and in doing so to convey to you the continuation of our friendship and of our sincere desire to keep ever lasting the harmony and good terms that have always existed between the two Republics. We are convinced that he will do so in a manner true to the feeling and respect that we have towards you. And we are praying God to have you Great and Good friends under his holy protection. Done in the City of Philadelphia the 7th day of February [1]797.” Signed at the conclusion in Adams’s hand, “G. Washington, Per the President, Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State.” Washington had appointed Adams as U. S. Minister to the Netherlands, where he served from 1794-1797. Interesting to note that this letter was written on the eve of John Adams’s electoral certification as the nation’s second president. John Quincy Adams’s father would appoint his minister to Prussia later in 1797 at the suggestion of George Washington. In fine condition, with bisecting horizontal fold, and a bit of light toning.
