Description

Writing the final chapters of David Copperfield, Dickens notes that “my work [is] pretty brisk right now”

ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, July 6, 1850. Letter to his manager T. J. Serle. In full: “I was not at home when Mr. Scott called; but, even if I had been, I could not have complied with his request. For my work/ pretty brisk now/ obliges me to forego all public, and many private, appearances.” James Irving Scott was the proprietor and editor of the Reporter, a London monthly financial journal. Both Serle and Scott were trying to get Dickens to join a committee against the Sabbatarian postage regulations. This letter was also published in The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1988), Volume VI. In fine condition. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
