Highly influential French painter (1840–1926) who was among the leading figures of the impressionist movement, which took its name from the title of one of Monet’s works. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, July 10, 1891. Monet writes from Giverny to Monsieur Knoedler [a member of the prominent American art-dealing firm of that name]. In full (translated): “I received your telegram yesterday and your letter this morning. I can only repeat what I have already written to you, it is impossible for me to make a new concession and that if you want to keep the creation it is at a price of four thousand. If you cannot you have to send it back to me. I am waiting to hear from you.” After signing, Monet adds a short postscript: “I would add that it makes twelve thousand for both paintings. Price offered by you according to principle.” A few words light and difficult to read, blue pencil notation touching date at upper left, and some very faint toning, otherwise fine condition.
