DS as president, one page, 17 x 14, September 29, 1887. President Cleveland appoints James Doherty to the position of Postmaster of Saint Charles, Illinois. Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Cleveland, and countersigned by Postmaster General William Vilas. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which has separated into two parts. In very good condition, with toning from ribbon over signature, a few partial separations along previous storage folds, and toning and mirroring from seal and ribbon.
