Description

Joyce in Paris

Influential Irish poet and novelist (1882–1941) whose distinctively innovative writings, including the novels Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake, take a place among the most epochal achievements in 20th-century literature. Ink return signature, “Envoi de J. Joyce, Hotel Lord Byron, 14 rue Lord Byron, Paris,” on the reverse of a tan 6 x 3.5 mailing envelope addressed in his hand to Madame Wallace in Montparnasse, Paris. The recipient was evidently Lillian Wallace, the wife of illustrator Richard Wallace, whom Joyce met in 1921, the year he completed Ulysses. Joyce scholar Paul O’Hanrahan places Joyce at the Hotel Lord Byron during a stay in Paris in October–November 1932. Matted and framed with a photo and two engraved plaques to an overall size of 27.75 x 16.25. Vertical fold, a few small tears (one, on flap, just touching one letter of return address), and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA. Oversized.
