First edition, first printing (with “May 1936” on copyright page; jacket with “Macmillan Spring Novels” on the back panel and Gone with the Wind listed second in the right column). NY: Macmillan, 1936. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6 x 8.75, 1037 pages. Signed in ink on the front free end page “Margaret Mitchell.” The rear pastedown bears a lightly affixed plastic pocket with an original calling card of General William T. Sherman, dated in an unknown hand April 14, 1881 and signed by Sherman on the reverse as “W. T. Sherman, General.” The page opposite is inscribed to Helen Pace Thompson by Samuel Y. Tupper, Jr., a novelist, editor, and friend of Mitchell’s who had helped Mitchell correct the original proofs for the book and gave it a positive review it in the Atlanta Journal. The inscription reads: “An autographed copy of Gone with the Wind was always a rarity—and is even more so now. So it is a pleasure to remember those exciting days when I reviewed the book and got my name on the jacket. So—here it is inside.” Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. In fine condition overall, with light soiling and wear to jacket (a few small tears and chips), very subtle rubbing to covers, mild toning to endpapers (touching signature but not affecting legibility in the least), minor smudges to a few pages, inscription and affixed pocket as noted, and mounting remnants to printed side of Sherman card.
