Description

British admiral and statesman (born 1900), uncle of Prince Philip, and Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia during World War II, who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979. ALS signed “Louis Mountbatten, Lieutenant, R.N.,” one page, 7 x 8.75, H.M.S. Revenge letterhead, July 26, 1923. Mountbatten writes a letter of recommendation. In part: “Mr. Sidney Avery served under my father, the late Admiral of the Fleet the Marquess of Milford Haven (Prince Louis of Battenburg) (who was the senior elder brother of the Trinity House) in the Secretary’s Office of H.M.S. Africa and H.M.S. King Edward VII, when my father commanded the 3rd & 4th Divisions of the home fleet. I have reason to believe that he gave every satisfaction and that were my father still alive he would not hesitate to recommend him.” Light intersecting folds (vertical fold to signature), mild soiling and handling wear, and punch hole, creases, and chips to upper left corner, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
