Description

“IT WOULD GREATLY HELP OUR CAUSE”: As the campaign season heats up, and five years before his own assassination, MCKINLEY writes the son of slain President James A. Garfield

ALS signed “W. McKinley,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, personal letterhead, March 5, 1896. McKinley writes to Ohio State Senator James R. Garfield (1865–1950), son of President James A. Garfield. Following McKinley’s own assassination, the younger Garfield was an important advisor to Theodore Roosevelt and served in Roosevelt’s cabinet as Secretary of the Interior from 1907 to 1909. In full: “I am much obliged for your letter and enclosures. I am certain if you could get your friend interested, it would greatly help our cause. I received a letter from Geo. Bushnell, which I sent to Mr. Smith, who is now in Cleveland and which I will write you about as soon as I can see or hear from Mr. Smith. It relates to the library. With best wishes, your friend….” Mailing fold lightly touching signature, faint smudge, slightly irregular left edge, and light paperclip impression to top margin, nothing detracting from the appearance, otherwise very fine, fresh condition. A most notable association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
