Description

“Distressed to hear of your illness”: FDR sends handwritten good wishes to the former director of the U.S. Mint

ALS, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, March 19, 1935. Roosevelt writes to Ray [Raymond T. Baker, 1877–1935, former director of the U.S. Mint]. In full: “I am distressed to hear of your illness. Do what the Doctors say & get on your feet again quickly. My affectionate regards….” Baker, who had suffered a heart attack, died a few months later. The reverse of the blank adjacent leaf bears the ink stamp of John Grissim, Baker’s great-nephew. Accompanied by a 2008 TLS of provenance from Grissim, who notes that an image of the letter was reproduced in an article on Baker in the July/August 1983 issue of Nevada magazine. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
