Description

Twentieth President of the United States (1881) and the second U.S. President to be assassinated (Abraham Lincoln was the first). His term was the second shortest in U.S. history, after William Henry Harrison’s. Holding office from March to September of 1881, President Garfield was in office for a total of just six months and fifteen days. Vintage 2.5 x 4.25 L. M. Rice carte-de-visite portrait (and so noted on reverse) photo, signed in the lower border in black ink, “J. A. Garfield, Ohio.” Notation on reverse, in another hand, reads, “Fr. Gen. Garfield, Feb 12 1876.” In very good to fine condition, with surface loss to top portion, affecting mostly background, diagonal crease to left side, and some scattered light silvering to darker areas. Despite the flaws, the crisp image and signature are largely unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
