FOOT SOLDIER: ALLENBY signs a photo of his entry into Jersualem

British Field Marshal (1861–1936) who led the Egyptian Expeditionary force in Palestine and Syria during World War I. Impressive and uncommon matte-finish 10.75 x 8.5 photo, signed and inscribed in ink “Field Marshall Allenby, Entry into Jerusalem, London, Decem. 11th 1917” [the date of the original image]. The reverse bears the ink stamp of the Imperial War Museum, Photographic Section Crystal Palace, London.” After capturing Jerusalem as part of one the pivotal campaigns in World War I, Allenby entered the city on foot in recognition of its status as a holy place. He later wrote of the event: “I entered the city officially at noon, December 11th, with a few of my staff, the commanders of the French and Italian detachments, the heads of the political missions, and the Military Attaches of France, Italy, and America. The procession was all afoot, and at Jaffa gate I was received by the guards representing England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, India, France, and Italy. The population received me well….” A touch of mild soiling, small tear to bottom edge touching last letter of “London,” and possible slight trimming, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
