Description

A FATHER’S TRAGEDY: LINDBERGH signs an original file photo from the notorious kidnapping case that gripped the nation

Original wire photo trimmed at the bottom edge to 7 x 5, signed in fountain pen “Charles A. Lindbergh.” The photo, dated on the caption slip (affixed to the bottom edge) September 26, 1934, is described thus: “Lindbergh arrives to testify at Hauptmann inquiry. Accompanied by Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf [father of the well-known Army general] … head of the New Jersey State Police, Col. Charles A. Lindbergh is shown as he arrived at the Bronx County Building, Sept. 25, to testify at the Bronx County Grand Jury’s Investigation into the case of Bruno R. Hauptmann, Lindbergh kidnap suspect.” The extraordinary—that is to say, unprecedented—attention afforded the case created unusual pressure for a conviction, and, though the verdict remains controversial to this day, Hauptmann was found guilty of the kidnapping and murder of Lindbergh’s infant son, and went to the electric chair on April 3, 1936. The photo bears several original editorial crop marks and outlines and a small whited-out area at the top edge. In very good condition, with trimming and markings as noted, a few surface marks and slight toning to edges, a few tiny brushes to signature, and tears to slip. Given the tragic circumstances and Lindbergh’s fiercely guarded privacy, his willingness to sign an image with a direct association to the case is quite extraordinary. Significant and highly unusual!
