Description

Franking signature as president, “Free, Andrew Jackson,” on a 5.25 x 3 (panel size) postal cover addressed the hand of Sarah Jackson [Jackson’s daughter-in-law, who served as White House hostess and unofficial First Lady] to her sister, Emma T. Donelson, at Miss Adams Boarding House in Philadelphia and bearing a Washington City postmark and “FREE” ink stamp. The adjacent leaf bears an 1837 ALS signed “Sarah,” sending news and good wishes. The franking panel is in good condition, with scattered soiling and staining (faint stain to last few letters of first name), small chips, and tape to left and right edges (touching paraph; near but not touching last letter of signature); the letter has partial separations along the folds and a few small holes and stains. The franking signature is otherwise dark and clear. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
