Excellent partly printed DS boldly signed as president, one page on vellum, 13 x 8.75, August 15, 1798. A commission for David Stickney as 1st Lieutenant of Marines in the Navy. Prior to his enlistment, Stickney (1774–1820) was a silversmith in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Ben. Stoddert and by Ch[arles] W. Goldsborough, who later served in the same position on an interim basis during the Madison administration. Light intersecting folds (well away from signature) and expected wrinkling, and a very subtle hint of toning at perimeter, otherwise fine, bright, clean condition.
