American naval admiral (1806-1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to read admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863 War-dated LS signed “A. H. Foote,” one page, 7.25 x 9.25, May 6, 1863. Foote writes as Chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting to C. K. Stribling, Commandant of the Navy Yard. In part: “The Bureau was under the impression that a regulation of the Department had assigned the classes of vessels to which yeomen were allowed, as in the cases of paymasters and surgeons’ stewards. You will be pleased to supply the omission of yeoman in the complements of the crews of the Bermuda & Princess Royal….” Matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 15.25 x 13.
