MOTION PICTURE OF HEALTH: DISNEY signs his 1940 life insurance application

DS, signed “Walter E. Disney,” one page both sides, 9 x 11.75, March 23, 1940. An application submitted to the Oregon Mutual Life Insurance Company , filled out in ink by Dr. Glenn D. English, stating he examined Disney, listing Disney’s occupation as “Cartoonist-Producer,” and providing a fairly detailed personal medical history. In part: “Tonsillectomy 1932; Run down, overwork 1932—took 2 month boat trip, recovery; Flu 1918 1 week—mild—recovery; Typhoid 1916—2 wks—mild—recovery; Fracture right forearm 1918—2 wks—recovery; mumps, measles, chicken pox in early childhood....” The reverse bears the results of a detailed medical examination with Disney’s vital signs, urinalysis, and additional notes from the doctor: “Does not appear nervous, appears vigorous & healthy.... Recent EKG, x-ray and fluoroscope—all unusual.” English also indicates that he examined Disney in his home on March 23, 1940. Accompanied by a related 15-page Business Beneficiary Report, dated two weeks later, detailing Disney’s family history, his company’s finances, (including assets, liabilities, profit and loss figures, stock ownership of 60%, and net worth of $3,362,132.44), and his personal and health habits. The document also provides a detailed history of the company: “Mr. Disney, who had years of experience as a cartoonist and maker of animated cartoons for the motion picture industry, had created the character in cartoons known as ‘Mickey Mouse’.... This organization became world-famous and for several consecutive years received the motion-picture Academy Award.... Originally the company made only shorts, Mr. Disney then making the feature length animated cartoon which was released under the name of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ that film achieving world wide success and has resulted in the studio making further feature length pictures, the latest release being ‘Pinocchio’....” Show-through from writing on reverse, scattered creasing and wrinkling, several tears at top edge, losses at punch holes, and several office notations, otherwise very good condition. A uniquely intimate document of the animation giant! PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
