Five TLS signed “Rockwell,” 1950, all to Ned [Travis], touching on various personal and artistic matters and current events. A few excerpts follow. February 20, 1950: “I haven’t had time to look up prints, for I have just received a rush commission….” June 10, 1950: “I spoke at the Manhattan Center meeting for the launching of the Stockholm Appeal. I wish that that moving appeal could enlist the interest of one of your great California printers—Grabhorn or Platin. It deserves to be set up and printed in beautiful form and of such a size that it could be hung on walls of offices and homes….” August 10, 1950: “It has occurred to us that this damned Korean war may have affected your building venture. It has certainly affected the minds of most of us and has speeded up the process of undemocratizing America…. At the Metropolitan Museum [the Hallinans] saw a picture of mine that they liked so much that they now want to buy one….” September 11, 1950: “This business in Korea, with its potential threat of another world conflagration, has had enough effect on the morale of the people on the East Coast for us to guess that the effect on the Pacific Coast may have been more serious….” Intersecting folds lightly touching signature and mild scattered soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
