Philosopher and psychologist (1842–1910) and brother of novelist Henry James. William James taught philosophy at Harvard and became known as one of the founders of pragmatism. His major works include The Principles of Psychology, The Varieties of Religious Experience, and The Meaning of Truth. ALS signed “Wm. James,” three pages on two adjoining sheets (the last page in oblong format), 5 x 8, April 18 [no year]. James writes from Cambridge [Mass.] to his cousins “Lily, and Bessie, and Louisa & all.” In part: “Aunt Kate has just told us of your dear father’s sudden end, but with no other details. You have been ready for it for so long that in one sense it must be a relief to have it all over & him safe from earthly dangers; but of course you must feel the emptiness extremely, and will feel it more and more…. Aunt Kate is now the last of our Grandmother’s children. The disappearance of a generation is a pretty solemn thing. I can only send you my warmest affection and sympathy, & pray that you may see in this bereavement the orderly workings of a Divine Wisdom that has us all in its hand and makes everything happen where & when it rightfully should….” Mailing fold to first name of signature, otherwise very fine, fresh condition.
