War-dated handwritten endorsement, “Respectfully referred to the Secretary of War, A. Lincoln, July 15, 1861,” on the reverse of the second page of a two-page letter from E. R. Jewett to Secretary of War Simon Cameron, the folded panel measuring 3.25 x 8, Jewett’s letter dated July 10, 1861. The letter to Cameron reads, in part: “I would respectfully recommend the appointment of Mr. George W. Hoffman of Michigan as paymaster in the regular Army. Mr. Hoffman is a gentleman of high character, and possesses unusual qualifications for a proper discharge of the duties of the place so far as family considerations may be regarded as adding to his claims, but few, I think, can offer a more deserving record. Col. Hoffman, the father, a gallant officer, after long service died of a disease contracted during the Florida War; a brother died in the service, and another brother was killed at the battle of Cherobasco in Mexico....” Countersigned by several others. Accompanied by a CDV photo. In very good condition, with light scattered toning and soiling, edge separations at folds, and ink docket in another hand written over four words of Lincoln’s endorsement.
