Celebrated pair of conjoined twins (1811–1874), the original “Siamese” twins, whose medical condition granted them a place among the most prominent celebrities of the 19th century. Born in present-day Thailand, the twins toured as a curiosity before settling in the United States and becoming successful businessmen. The twins, who were slaveowners, married sisters, alternated between two residences in North Carolina, and fathered 22 children between them before dying several hours apart at the age of 62. Scarce early reprint CDV photo of the older twins, 2.5 x 4, signed in pencil beneath the image “Eng” and “& Chang.” Mild rippling, light allover soiling, and scattered rubs and surface marks, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
