Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” Partially-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 9.5 x 15, March 7, 1811. Governor Gerry appoints John McMillen to the position of a Justice of Fryeberg, Massachusetts, and “authorised and empowered to administer (and receive subscription to) the Declaration and Oaths, or Affirmations, prescribed by the Constitution.” Signed in the upper left under the paper seal by Gerry.
