Description

VERY HIGH DEFINITION: Original pages from the Guidance and Navigation Dictionary flown on the APOLLO 11 mission and signed by BUZZ ALDRIN

Two original printed pages from the Lunar Module Guidance and Navigation Dictionary carried to the moon on the Apollo 11 mission, labeled “RECOV-1,” and “RECOV-3,” one single page and one double-sided page, 5.25 x 7.75, one signed in ballpoint, “Carried in Eagle to the Lunar Surface on Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin,” the other signed “Carried to the moon and to the lunar surface in Eagle, Buzz Aldrin,” and additionally signed on the reverse in blue ballpoint. Included with the pages is an undated TLS signed “Buzz Aldrin” explaining the purpose and provenance of the item. In part: “The complete Guidance and Navigation (G and R) Dictionary, including these sheets, was taken to the surface of the Moon in Lunar Module Eagle during the first lunar landing. Both these sheets are tinted red and RECOV was an abbreviation for Recovery. These two sheets represent an entire subsection of the G and N Dictionary. RECOV-1 has the General System Checkout steps associated with our LGC (LM Guidance Computer). Crew interface with the computer was via key strokes on the DSKY (Display and Keyboard).... The additional steps listed would then complete the system checkout. Neil Armstrong and I could then do a Reasonableness Check.... RECOV-2 has the P06 (LGC power down) steps which are a series of Verbs and Nouns entered via the DSKY. The separate sheet RECOV-3 has the Rapid IMU Realign. This procedure was a rapid resetting of our guidance platform if any anomalous event occurred such as a power loss or power spike. This required expert piloting by Neil to bring the LM to ‘all balls’ on the AGS and for me to execute V41 (course align).... Additional commands to null other values and reset our guidance platform was achieved with the remaining listed procedure. The complete dictionary was a vital component to the success of our mission.... These sheets have been in my private collection since 1969.” All three items are double matted and framed together to an overall size of 27.25 x 16.25. Punch holes to left edge of both manual pages, otherwise very fine condition. A superb and significant relic from this most avidly collected of space missions! Oversized. COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
