Description

Dumbing it down: Adams agrees to lecture for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

ALS signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 7.75 x 10, October 29, 1840. Letter to B. A. Gould. In full, “I had an engagement here on yesterday, the last Wednesday of this month which was yesterday, and have one at Salem on next Wednesday, in the first Week of November. If Thursday the 5th or Friday the 6th of next week would suit the managers of the Society for the diffusion of useful knowledge it will give me pleasure to deliver a lecture before them. They are the only days at my disposal, before my proposed departure for Washington.” The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was an organization that published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific material for the rapidly expanding reading public. It was established with the object of publishing information to people who were unable to obtain formal teaching, or who preferred self-education. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, a couple light creases, and some mild toning working in from edges. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
