ANCHORS AWEIGH: LINCOLN signs a naval appointment less than two months after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter

Attractive vellum partly-printed war-dated naval DS as president, one page, 13.5 x 16.5, June 1, 1861. President Lincoln appoints “George Washington Hayward … a Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.” Nicely signed at the conclusion in black ink by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Intersecting storing folds, one through opening stroke of signature, small area of damp staining to lower left and upper edges, and some light creases, toning and wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. Document is missing its original seal. All writing, including Lincoln’s signature, is clear and bold. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
