Description

“REPOSING SPECIAL TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN THE PATRIOTISM, VALOUR, FIDELITY, AND ABILITIES”: JEFFERSON signs a scarce 1809 military commission

Scarce partly printed DS as president, signed “Th: Jefferson,” one page on vellum, 15.25 x 18, February 23, 1809. A promotion for Alexander McIlheny as “first Lieutenant in the fifth Regiment of Infantry.” Countersigned by John Smith as Acting Secretary of War. The embossed paper seal remains intact at upper left. In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds (small holes; horizontal fold just touching bottom of “ff”), wrinkling, light toning and soiling, and ink stain to reverse showing through behind Smith’s signature. Jefferson’s signature is dark and distinct. Military commissions signed by Jefferson are quite elusive. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
