Partly printed DS as president, one page, 14.5 x 18, March 23, 1863. A promotion for George C. Strong as Brigadier General of Volunteers. The Vermont-born Strong (1832–1863) graduated fifth in the West Point Class of 1857, and, following his initial appointment as second lieutenant, quickly rose through the military ranks. Shortly after his promotion to brigadier general, Strong was assigned to South Carolina. Wounded during an assault on Fort Wagner on July 18, he died in New York on July 30. In a front-page New York Times obituary on the following day, Strong was characterized thus: “He was devoted to and accomplished in his profession, and in his death ... is lost a brave and valued officer.” On the same day, Congress passed a measure posthumously awarding Strong the rank of major general. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.5 x 25.5. Intersecting folds (horizontal fold through signature), usual wrinkling along edges, and signature on the light side but fully legible, otherwise fine, clean condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
