“A year of decision for American youth”: As the 1948 election draws near, Truman effusively praises the efforts of young Democrats

TLS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, White House letterhead, August 4, 1948. Truman writes to Marshall E. Hanley, President of the Young Democrats of Indiana. In part: “I am happy to extend greetings to the Young Democrats of Indiana, and to the candidates of the Democratic Party who are your guests. It is significant indeed that seven of the 11 Democratic candidates for Congress in Indiana, as well as your state chairman, are active members of the Young Democratic organization; there could hardly be more impressive evidence that the Democratic Party’s faith in its youth has been justified—that, when given responsibilities within the party framework, young people have measured up to them and have advanced to positions of leadership. The future of the Democratic Party belongs to its youth, who in time to come will shape its destiny; and I am heartened that you Young Democrats of Indiana are bringing into the party councils your own youthful enthusiasm and idealism. In no small measure, the success of our party in years past, and the proud tradition it bears today, stem from its vigorous approach to the problems confronting the nation—an approach which surely reflects a genuine spirit of youth within its ranks. We of the Democratic Party have ever retained youthful ideas and hopes, youthful visions of a better land that can be ours if we have the courage to fashion it in the image of our dreams. We have dared to take bold strides along the path of human rights. We have made of government an instrument by which the people may protect and expand their free heritage. We have sought to bring a life of abundance and happiness to all. The year 1948 is truly a year of decision for American youth. It is youth’s opportunity to join with us in continuing the great social advances of the past 15 years, in preserving the physical and moral resources of a people to whom the world looks for leadership in peace….” Accompanied by an unsigned original 10 x 8 photo of the Hanley family posing with JFK. A few minor marginal wrinkles, otherwise fine, bright condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
