Description

Understudies: An ailing Ike turns down a speaking engagement and instead suggests “Such people as Mr. Richard Nixon, Governors Romney, Hatfield and Scranton, and others”

TLS, one page, 7 x 9.75, personal letterhead, June 22, 1965. Ike writes to Lou Cohen of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County United Nations Committee. In part: “I have been advised by my doctors to begin cutting down drastically on my out-of-town engagements, particularly when they involve ceremonies requiring a speech from me. I have promised both the doctors and my family to observe their instructions…. By no means do I want to seem as indifferent to the fine work you and your associates have been doing to promote respect for the United Nations; quite the contrary. I applaud your efforts and sincerely hope that you might get someone as your speaker this fall who can provide some added stimulus for the community. Such people as Mr. Richard Nixon, Governors Romney, Hatfield and Scranton, and others of the same standing and ability might be considered….” In very good condition, with trimming to top edge, light scattered toning and wrinkling, and mailing fold just touching top edge of last name. The signature is bold, dark, and otherwise unaffected. R&R COA.
