Description

A SLAVEHOLDER ON ABOLITION: Soon-to-be-president Tyler requests a copy of “the resolutions offered by myself ... on the subject of abolishing slavery”

ALS, one page, 7.5 x 10, August 20, 1836. Tyler writes from Gloucester Courthouse, Virginia, to Wallis Lowrie. In full: “Will you do me the favor with as little delay as possible to have copied and forward me the resolutions offerd by myself to the Senate last winter on the subject of abolishing slavery in the District—a loose sheet of the journal would be better than a copy. Your cooperation will much oblige.” Significantly, the Virginia-born Tyler was a lifelong slaveholder who espoused a policy allowing individual states to decide the slavery question, and, following his presidency, served in the Confederate Congress. Tiny chips to top edge, intersecting mailing folds (one vertical fold touching signature) and scattered tiny ink spots and blots from premature folding (lightly touching first name), otherwise fine, clean condition. Boldly penned, nicely preserved, and of great historical interest! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
