Widow’s lament: “But to me the years, though they cannot separate me from my great sorrow, do move me on to the fulfillment of all things.”

Wife of President James Garfield and First Lady from March to September 1881. ALS signed “Lucretia R. Garfield,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 6.25, personal letterhead, October 28, 1884. A letter from Mrs. James Garfield, widowed three years earlier, to North Carolina Superior Court Judge, and noted carpetbagger, Albion Tourgee. In part, “I have not forgotten the day you spent with us nor your helpfulness. Those same boys are now in their college senior year and make me know how the years are hurrying us on. But to me the years, though they cannot separate me from my great sorrow, do move me on to the fulfillment of all things. In fine condition, with reinforcement along spine of pages and some scattered light toning from adhesive residue to reverse of second page. R&R COA.
