Description

Garfield notes his Civil War service: “I was not at Ivy Mountain with General Nelson but went up the Sand Valley.”

Twentieth President of the United States (1881) and the second U.S. President to be assassinated (Abraham Lincoln was the first). His term was the second shortest in U.S. history, after William Henry Harrison’s. Holding office from March to September of 1881, President Garfield was in office for a total of just six months and fifteen days. LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.5 x 10.25, July 6, 1880. Garfield answers a question about his service in the Civil War. In full, “Yours of the 12th June came duly to hand but I have not had time to answer it until now. I was not at Ivy Mountain with General Nelson but went up the Sand Valley in the January following his expedition.” Letter is affixed to a slightly larger sheet of heavier stock. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, light mirroring of ink, and a couple trivial brushes to end portion of signature. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
