A PRESIDENT’S COMPASSION: Jefferson provides for the widows and orphans of two soldiers who “were killed by the said Indians"

Printed DS, boldly signed “Th. Jefferson” as Secretary of State, one page, 8 x 7, February 27, 1793. A printing of a congressional act providing relief to the families of two officers slain during a Native American diplomatic mission. In part: “Whereas Colonel John Harding, and Major Alexander Trueman, while employed in carrying messages of peace to the hostile Indians, were killed by the said Indians: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives … That four hundred and fifty dollars per annum for seven years, be allowed to the widow and orphan-children of the said Colonel John Harding, and the sum of three hundred dollars per annum, for the same term of seven years, to the orphan children of the said Major Alexander Trueman….” The document is signed in type at the conclusion by George Washington; Jefferson adds his name below, next to his printed title of office. Archivally double suede matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Jefferson, to an overall size of 25.5 x 17.5. In fine, crisp condition, with two faint horizontal folds.
